    Brenda Rees is a freelance journalist with decades of experience that showcases her versatility and unending curiosity. She\u2019s written for The Los Angeles Times<\/em>, Westways Magazine,<\/em> Arroyo Monthly,<\/em> Edible San Fernando Valley, Pomona College Magazine<\/em> and more. She cut her editorial teeth and won awards at The Tidings<\/em>, a weekly newspaper of the Catholic Archdiocese; she has edited newsletters, simplified complex academic case studies, and created Southern California Wildlife,<\/em> a blog featuring wildlife issues in the Greater Los Angeles area.<\/p>\n

    Brenda currently works as a freelance writer and newsletter columnist highlighting people and companies that are making a difference for The Eastsider LA, <\/em>an online news publication. For more than seven years, she's served as newsletter editor and board member for Friends of Griffith Park, and can finally say that she is able to tell the difference between a crow and a raven.<\/p>\n\t\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t\t\t\t<\/li>\n\t\t<\/ul>\t\t\t\t

      ROOM 8: A CAT IN THE CLASSROOM<\/strong><\/strong><\/h1>\n
      \n

      In his 16 years living in the classrooms and hallways of Elysian Heights Elementary School, a cat by the odd name of Room 8, was said to never have growled or scratched a human. Maybe he knew he had achieved cat nirvana; his hefty size was direct evidence of his lucky and good life.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      Room 8 arrived at the school sometime in 1952 \u2013 no one was quite sure of the exact day. The stray cat suddenly appeared in the doorway, walked in and, in true cat fashion, instantly claimed the room as his own. The sixth grade class was smitten \u2013 and soon the City of Los Angeles was too.<\/strong><\/p>\n

      In the fall of 1962, photographer Richard Hewett was hired by Look magazine to document a day in the life of L.A.\u2019s most famous feline. Those photos are featured in my new book, Room 8: A Cat in the Classroom published by Photo Friends of the Los Angeles Public Library.<\/a><\/strong><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n\t\t<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div>
